When you spend enough time obsessing over shoes, you eventually start thinking about everything around them. Because at the end of the day—no matter how good your footwear is—you still need something respectable to wear from the waist down. As a ‘denim-lover’, it was natural for me to dip my toes into the custom world by commissioning these custom jeans by Charles Paige Atelier
If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know I love denim. Jeans are easy, comfortable, and practical, especially when your day involves moving around, getting dusty, and generally not living a desk-only life. But there’s always been a gap between casual jeans and proper trousers. And that gap gets wider the moment you leave the city and suddenly feel overdressed just for wearing tailored pants.
And that is where Charles Paige Atelier steps in to help!

Denim, But Smarter
Charles Paige Atelier—run by my longtime friend Lewis Malivanek—has introduced a denim offering that bridges that gap beautifully. You can go the traditional route with a classic five-pocket jean, or you can take things a step further with what I’d call denim trousers. Yes, there is a difference.
In Europe, trousers are trousers, jeans are jeans, and chinos are chinos. In the U.S., we lump everything under “pants.” These custom jeans by Charles Paige Atelier sit firmly in that European camp: jeans built with tailoring in mind.

Fabric & Make
The denim itself is Italian—crafted by Candiani Denim, one of the most respected mills in the world. It’s soft, flexible, and comfortable right out of the gate, without feeling flimsy or over-processed.
The jeans are made in China, which frankly shouldn’t raise eyebrows anymore. Modern Chinese manufacturing is capable of excellent quality when the materials, specs, and oversight are right—and here, they clearly are. The result is a well-executed garment that feels and looks luxurious while staying true to quality at its core.
Two Approaches: Classic & Tailored
The first pair is your straightforward custom jean:
- Belt loops
- Button and zip fly
- Made-to-measure fit
- Italian denim with real comfort
These are simple, familiar, and well done. And extremely comfortable. But the second pair is where things get interesting.
The ‘denim trousers’ ditch the belt loops entirely and instead feature side adjusters, a cleaner waistband, subtle front pleating, and a more trouser-like structure. They’re casual through the leg but noticeably dressier up top—exactly where it matters if you’re tucking in a polo or wearing loafers in warmer months.
This is the kind of detail that lets you dress up without feeling overdressed.

Fit Choices (Yes, I Went Fuller)
Some of you will be pleased to know I didn’t go skin-tight this time. I opted for a fuller cut—what most would call a light boot cut—purely out of practicality. Slim jeans don’t always play nicely with chunkier boots, and sometimes comfort and proportion need to win. As I plan to move soon to Idaho and will incorporate a lot more boots into my life, I need the garments to match! And skin-tight jeans simply won’t do anymore 😉
That’s the beauty of made-to-measure: you don’t need alterations, compromises, or excuses.
Why This Works
What I like most about these jeans is that they acknowledge reality. Most of us want to be comfortable, casual, and practical—but still look like we’ve put some thought into what we’re wearing.
These manage that balance better than most:
- Casual enough for daily wear
- Refined enough to pair with smart shoes
- Thoughtfully detailed without being precious
Final Thoughts
If you’re denim-obsessed like I am and find yourself in New York City, Charles Paige Atelier is well worth a visit. Louis offers a wide range of colors—multiple shades of blue, greys, whites, and more—and if money were no object, I’d happily grab these in every color variation on offer.
But until then, one well-made pair at a time will do just fine.
As always, it’s reassuring when the person behind a brand dresses well himself. It usually means the details matter—and here, they clearly do. Lewis is always sharply presented, and it shows in his final garments.
Stay tuned for more non-shoe content mixed in with the usual footwear deep dives. Sometimes, what surrounds the shoes deserves just as much attention 😉
