My style is always adapting these days. Midlife crisis stuff, I guess. Jokes aside, I was never a fan of the ‘classic moc’ popularized by prepsters in the US and JM Weston in France. But as I get older, and wear more and more denim, I see this subtle take on a smart loafer more appealing for my daily jean wear. The Septieme Largeur classic moc, named Manhattan, has great appeal. This is especially true as they have focused on suede for this model, which I find more befitting to this style.

Septieme Largeur recently released a new sand suede option for the classic moc, accompanying the Hazelnut and Dark Brown suede options that were already in the collection. The new option is nice. The Sand suede color would look great with a pair of light denim jeans or even olive chinos, and the like. I would personally probably get the most use out of the Hazelnut suede, but that is really because it is one of my favorite suede colors. The dark brown is nice, but I prefer to use that color for more sharp, dress-style loafers.

One distinction is that the new Sand suede Manhattan is made with Blake construction. The other colorways are welted. I presume their clients wanted something more relaxed and flexible, so Septieme Largeur opted for the ‘less stiff’ constructions. Understandably, when going for something less dressy and more casual, a Blake shoe can make sense for those who find it comfortable. Another notch for the Hazelnut suede, as I always prefer welted footwear. But that is just my own personal preference.

I will soon be moving to Idaho, and I won’t lie: part of me fears what that might do to my style. Mine has always been influenced by where I lived and what I was doing, whether I meant for it to happen or not. So I may need to schedule regular business trips back to the city just to keep myself in check. Otherwise, next thing you know, I will be preaching the virtues of suede classic mocs with semi-blunt round toes and workwear boots. Not really, but let’s be honest, the place you live always rubs off on you somehow, and being in the suburbs for the last few years has me liking more casual stuff by the day!
But the reality is that these Septieme Largeur Classic Mocs are a lovely option for those who want a smart knockaround loafers that can easily pair well with jeans, chinos, and even be dressed up if need be.
