An Overlooked Classic in Men’s Style
Most men reach for black, navy, or grey socks without much thought. They’re safe, easy, and neutral — but they can also make an outfit feel predictable. Somewhere between the bold statement colors and the everyday basics lies a hue that deserves far more attention: green socks.
Green socks rarely get the credit they deserve. They’re understated yet distinctive — colorful enough to show personality, but subtle enough to stay sophisticated. In many ways, the green sock is the perfect bonus color: the one that quietly upgrades your wardrobe without shouting for attention.

Why Green Works
The beauty of green lies in its versatility. Most shades of green — especially darker tones like olive, forest, or bottle green — pair beautifully with the classic shoe colors we all wear: brown, tan, burgundy, and even green (like suede).
A deep olive sock adds depth to a brown calf oxford or derby. A muted emerald works perfectly with navy or grey trousers. And when paired with burgundy shoes, green offers that subtle contrast that shows taste and confidence without crossing into “flashy.”
Unlike louder colors like red or bright purple, green sits comfortably between the formal and the expressive. It’s the kind of choice that gets noticed by those who appreciate detail — not because it demands attention, but because it feels intentional.

Green vs. The Other “Bonus Colors”
As my own style has evolved, I’ve found myself wearing more brown socks day to day — they’re incredibly useful with both navy and earth tones. Still, when it comes to adding a bit of interest beyond the basics, green remains king among the underrated options.
Other colors like burgundy, rust, or mustard can be striking, but they often compete with the rest of your outfit. Green, on the other hand, complements rather than dominates. It works across seasons, from heavy wool pairs in winter to lighter cottons in summer. Just see my green linen ones below!
It’s the quiet achiever in the rotation — the color that reminds you subtly can still make a statement.

How to Wear Green Socks Well
- Let them peek, not scream — a flash of green at the ankle is all you need.
- Choose darker shades like forest, olive, or bottle green for formal looks — only go brighter as you get more experienced.
- Experiment with textures — wool for dress shoes, cotton/linen for loafers or sneakers.
- Pair them with brown, tan, or burgundy shoes for a harmonious palette. Tone on tone with your shoes is also easy.
- Avoid overly bright greens, which can feel too sporty unless that’s the intent – or it’s Summer and/or you are in Miami 😉
Why You Need Green Socks
You don’t need to overhaul your sock drawer — just make room for a little green. In a world where navy and grey dominate, green offers a subtle way to stand out while staying tasteful.
It’s the overlooked hero of the sock world: practical, versatile, and quietly elegant. Once you add a few pairs to your rotation, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

My favourite dress socks tend to be brown/blue striped ones…but I have some green socks, especially those in forest green that I really, really, like for casual wear. They are definitely… different. Nice article, btw…
Justin old chap, you’re talking nonsense this time. Re socks: green should never be seen. The best socks I’ve come across, by a country mile, are made by the London Sock Company. No affiliation. Google them. Warm regards, Digby
hahaha, not a chance 😉 Dark Green goes very well with dark brown suede. I know of the London Sock Company, but never had the pleasure of owning a pair. One day 😉
Dear Justin
I feel your photographs show beauty of green socks and brown shoes. I would even prefer shades of green you don’t show. Green is a wonderful color for socks.
Fair. I enjoy your insights by the way. Very interesting.
Dear Digby
My experience with the cotton socks of the London Sock Company was bad because inevitably almost every sock developed holes.
After awhile it became too embarrassing for me to request exchange.
One result of my bad experience was to rethink the percentage of synthetic added.
I see in the past few years that other firms have increased this percentage.
That’s why I asked Justin about Swole Panda and bamboo boot socks.
Hi Peter,
That’s interesting. I’ve only just bought about eight pairs and am wearing them now. The colours and fit are lovely but I’ll see how long they last…
How long should socks last? I tell my students, when they’re cheeky, that I have socks older than them!! And it’s true…
Dear Digby
I don’t presume to generalize my experience with London Sock Company socks and am glad you don’t have my problem. I realize now I might have avoided addressing you and instead formulated my comment in another way to ask if anybody had a similar experience but better with Swole Panda bamboo, which I have not yet tried.
Dear Justin
Green is a wonderful color.
Q1: Why do socks get holes exactly middle rear – is this result of abrasion with shoe and boot?
Q2: Would 100% bamboo be the best most durable sock material, aside from aspect of weather temparature?
Indeed! Q1: Yes, the friction with the lining, especially the rough lining on loafers. Q2: hard to say. I have worn bamboo socks casually but never for dress as they are usually more casually made. But I presume it would be a very durable make, yes.
Dear Digby Fox
My comment and experience with cotton socks sold by London Sock Company may be interesting to you, but getting holes in these socks after a short time i.e. a few wears is not cool. That’s why I stopped – I was forced to stop wearing them.
But I am glad for you that you have a good experience.
What I learned is that more durable socks might be possible if the amount of synthetic is increased,
and/or bamboo socks might be more abrasion resistant.
Greetings Justin. Missed the NYC Trunk Show. Was out of town. Looking foward to learning how it went. As per green socks , I purchased a pair from Mes Chaussettes ( Dam hard to spell ) along with the discount you provided. The color and quality are amazing. I’m looking foward to wearing it with a beautiful custom green blazer I procured from Brooks Brothers. The only outstanding issue is what shoes I will pair them with. Therein lies the excitement. Perhaps the black Patton leather Fitzpatrick loafer I purchased from you ( Ballinger). Best to you and all our fellow shoe snobbers. Nelson.
Sorry to have missed you Nelson! Thanks for sharing and enjoy them when you get that chance!
I’ve included green sock of various shades in my wardrobe for over 40 years. There were times they were very difficult to find. I appreciate the choices we have now. (I like Mes chaussettes Rouges. London Sock Company also has a very nice British racing green.)
Thanks for sharing Peter!
