Today we look at my new Berwick loafers, called ‘Palma Flex’. These new comfort flex-style suede loafers are all the rage as we continue the perpetual ‘smart-casual’ stage of menswear. Truthfully, there is a good reason for this: they are smart-looking, comfortable, flexible, and versatile. Although I will forever love my dress shoes, I always appreciate shoes like this for the weekends and/or more casual settings, especially during the Summer when temperatures prohibit too much clothing.
A few years ago, I gave up my love for the city and moved to the suburbs. I never looked back and loved my new suburban life. One thing I traded though, especially as I entered a new decade of life, was always being ‘dressed up’. I love to be smart during the work week when I present myself to clients and hit the big city but when running around grocery stores, doing errands, hitting the parks, etc, I felt that a causal version of a smart shoe was more appropriate. The problem is that I don’t always want to be in a sneaker either.
This is where a nice suede shoe, whether it’s a loafer, chukka style, chelsea etc with a soft sole comes into place. It will be good for a lot of movement and potentially beating up without realizing it. On top of that it styles like this are also great for traveling. A good soft loafer is great for the plane. I always dress ‘nice’ when traveling but really don’t want to wear leather-soled shoes as I am often on long-haul flights and suffer from foot swelling. So I always look for something soft and flexible yet elegantly smart.
