With my fascination of shoes/boots with buttons on them, it should be no surprise to anyone that I am also someone that appreciates the old spat accessory that was so often used in the Edwardian/Victorian eras. But even though I do like them, I don’t often find myself wearing them. Come to think about it though, it is most probably because they are tucked away in my scarf box, only to be seen or thought of in the colder months. What is often out of sight, is often out of mind. But I feel that I need to make an effort into getting them back on, especially as I own the ones in the picture above.
Now I won’t lie and say that they are practical but for me they are no different to the idea of wearing a pocket square. They are both not necessary but rather just a nice addition to one’s attire, especially if worn right. Yet, only people that love the Victorian era wear them. I guess I can understand why too but it wouldn’t be uncool if more people did so. It would at least make for a great picture to see 10 guys lined up with well polished shoes all with spats of different colors. Hmmmm that would be an amazing marketing campaign of some sort…..might give that a go!
The Spats in top picture come from Gottlieb Schwarz out of Russia (as do the shoes). He does not have an online shop but for those of you in Europe, it is easy enough to phone him up and get a pair (to which he offers in several colors).
